If you’re reading this, you’re ready to transform your summer travel into something unforgettable. Let me tell you: this Dubrovnik sunset kayaking excursion isn’t just an activity you want—it’s one you need.
Here’s exactly why:
Why you need this experience…
Feel Like a Warrior — Despite Health Worries
I have heart concerns – but all activities I want to do are stamped with “no heart issues” by GetYourGuide, Viator and other tour guides…but with my doctor’s OK and knowing my limits, the team was so understanding.
They equipped me, gave a quick but solid safety chat, and that was it – I felt empowered, not limited.
Ladies, especially those of us who’ve had doctors’ doubts about our hearts, this proves your body can take you exactly as far as your spirit does.
Solo-Travel Sisterhood in Action
As a solo traveller, I ended up paired with another courageous woman from the USA in a double sit-on kayak, and we instantly clicked. There’s something about navigating waves side-by-side that sparks real connection.
We swapped stories, snapped sunset selfies, and created a bond you just can’t script. Solo female travellers, this is your chance to travel fearlessly but never alone.
Sun-Drenched Summer Vibes
It’s summer. The Adriatic is warm (26 °C recently at 7 pm). You cruise through golden-hour light, paddle beneath Dubrovnik’s famed stone walls, and your evening soundtrack is gentle waves.
It’s not just a tour – it’s a sensory celebration (and the water is super warm and cozy!)
Historical Perspectives From the Sea
Imagine gliding close enough to Dubrovnik’s UNESCO-listed walls to practically trace each stone with your paddle. We saw this when we got close to Betina cave – the wall was being held up by two massive stone pillars, hidden by the sea and city walls.
On our tour, we also skimmed past Buža Bar, Villa Sheherezade, the Lazareti quarantine, and the iconic Lovrijenac Fortress—all while our guide unravelled local legends and Game of Thrones trivia.
It’s history, wrapped in sunset hues GetYourGuide.
Hidden-Gem Adrenaline in Betina Cave
Halfway through, we beelined into Betina Cave – accessible only by sea – swimming and snorkelling in eerie-blue glow, speckles of sun filtering in, fish darting around our legs.
This secret sanctuary is included on every tour for a reason. It’s exclusive, thrilling, and postcard-perfect.
What to Expect (And Why You’ll Thank Me Later)
Start + Safety Briefing
You’ll begin at Pile Bay (near Pile Gate), where you get an unbelievable view of the stones that feature in Game of Thrones! You’ll get fitted with your kayak, paddle, life jacket, and waterproof bag and / or pot, and then pair up with your partner
The guides are pros – friendly and professional, and very good at comforting you with their humour. The guys are pretty fine too! (Shh!)
Paddle the City Walls
Drift parallel to the centuries-old walls, experiencing Dubrovnik’s grandeur from a completely new angle. Just seeing the rocks and walls from the sea felt incredible.
Head Toward Lokrum Island
You don’t landing on Lokrum Island, but circle it instead. You can admire its lush flora, and as it is a sunset tour, you can watch it glow under golden skies.
Magic at Betina Cave
I think everyone’s favourite part of the trip was when we stopped for 30 minutes at Betina Cave. Make sure you remember your water shoes, though, as the rocks and stones are pretty difficult to climb over!
Half an hour of swimming, snorkelling (they provide the equipment), and if you feel brave, maybe try your chances at cliff-jumping or investigating the tunnel on the left of the inside of the cave. I’ll be honest…I swam about a metre in and then got spooked!
The famous Dubrovnik birds circling ahead at the top of the cave made the most beautiful serene sound. While everyone else was snorkelling or being a bit wild, I preferred to literally float on my back and look up at the birds and the top of the cave, admiring the beauty and having a little mediation session.
Sunset Finale + Return
Paddle back to Pile Gate under the sunset light, and stop a few times to grab beautiful photos of the sunsetting behind the city walls. When you return to shore, you get the chance to share a drink (sometimes local wine!), and soak in the post-tour glow.
Obvs, as a non-drinker, they didn’t have anything to cater to me, but I took a shot of water and joined the fun!

Real Talk: Safety & Accessibility
✅ The tour is beginner friendly and they even allow kids (I think it is above age 8?) No prior experience is needed, and you can hang back and take your pace however you like.
✅ Guides are equipped with strict safety protocols, and we were lucky enough to have two guides with us. One of our guides seemed to very much enjoy chatting with me and my new American friend, as we were taking our time and enjoying the views – rather than racing ahead like everyone else.
✅ A waterproof bag (a BIG one!) and/or a waterproof pot thing are provided, so you can keep your phone and camera dry and accessible, without worrying about leaving it all on the shoreside or having it fall out of your pocket!
✅ Health-conscious: As the tour says it is not recommended for people with heart, back or other health problems, it is important to mention any issues at the time of booking; if your doctor’s cleared you, you’re good to go!
