Keeping your family healthy doesn’t have to be hard – just follow these two smart habits.

As a parent, it’s your responsibility to look after your family’s health and wellbeing.

This might be one of the bare minimum tasks of a parent, but that doesn’t mean that it’s easy or simple! Life is complicated and messy, and sickness can strike at any time.

So, here is a bit of advice to help you maintain your family’s health, as well as what you can do if they get unwell.

A Healthy Lifestyle

No matter your family situation, whether you’re all relatively fit and healthy or whether someone in the family has a chronic health condition, the first and most basic step is to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

In some ways, this is even more important if someone is chronically ill or disabled. Good general health will help manage a condition much better.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can be broken down into four main areas:

If you generally eat nutritious, home-prepared meals, your family will be healthier and less prone to weight-related health conditions.

Hydration is also a vital part of your diet. Ideally, you and your children should be drinking at least a couple of litres of water a day, or six to eight glasses. Your body is mostly water, so it makes sense to replenish that water.

Exercise is important for children and adults alike. We’re designed to move. Even if you are limited due to health problems, find an exercise regime that will work and keep you as fit as possible.

Finally, sleep is your body’s way of restoring itself and resting.

Most adults need six to eight hours of sleep at night, and children should get between eight and ten hours of sleep to stay healthy.

Seeking Medical Help

If you do suspect that you or one of your family members is unwell, it’s important to see a doctor as soon as possible. Most illnesses will pass with treatment or even rest, and a doctor can reassure you and do tests to make sure that there’s nothing seriously wrong.

For most common conditions, a visit to the GP will work just fine. However, if you need quicker or more focused treatment, it can be a good idea to get private healthcare.

For example, an MRI machine is the gold standard for diagnostic care, but there is a significant waiting list unless your condition is deemed urgent.

You can get a private MRI scan for more rapid diagnosis. The results can then be used to work out what’s wrong and find the best treatment option.

You should also seek medical help for mental health concerns, especially for your children. Again, depending on your circumstances, you can use public healthcare or go private.

Private healthcare often gives you a much quicker diagnosis and treatment time, and you may have more say in your treatments.

A doctor can also help you if you’re considering a lifestyle change, especially if you or your child does have a chronic health condition.

Nobody likes going to the doctor, but it’s usually the best option.
